Download a free black screen video, 480p to 8K, five seconds to one hour. MP4, WebM or MOV, no signup, no audio.
A black screen video is an ordinary video file whose every frame is solid black at 16:9 — no logo, no timecode, no watermark, no audio. Ours are encoded in advance and served from a CDN, so Download saves a finished clip rather than building one in your browser. Choose the resolution, the length and the container your player accepts.

Read the summary under “More options” first: estimated size, codec, and no audio track.
Click Download and the file saves straight to your device. No account, no email, nothing held back.
Every resolution from 480p to 8K, all eight lengths, and all three formats are free — no account, no payment, no watermark.
Fade-to-black transitions, title-card beds, spacers between segments, and placeholders while a shot is still being graded. Drop in a clip that already matches your sequence — same resolution, same 16:9 frame — and Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro take it without a render pass. The five- and ten-second files cover most transitions.
Fill a screen with nothing and a panel has nowhere to hide. This is the check to run on a monitor while the return window is open, on a second-hand phone before you pay, and on a TV you are about to calibrate. Play it fullscreen in a dark room; the section below names each fault.
A standby slate before a keynote, between conference sessions, or while a band changes over. A dark projector beats a desktop, a screensaver, or a blue “No Signal” card, and it holds the room without powering the projector down and waiting for it to warm up again. Load the 30-minute file and set it to repeat.
Keep the display dark all night without switching it off. The file carries no audio track, no ad break and no autoplay card to light the room at 2 a.m. On an OLED phone a black pixel is simply an unlit one, so the screen can stay on for hours drawing almost nothing, and it plays offline.
The base layer for a podcast upload, an ASMR track, a lyric video or a text-only intro card. Solid black holds white type at maximum contrast and gives the encoder almost nothing to spend bitrate on, so more of the platform's compression budget goes to whatever you lay on top. In OBS, a starting-soon scene.
Media playback normally stops a phone, tablet or laptop dimming or locking. Loop a dark clip fullscreen and you get that with almost no light in the room and nothing extra installed — useful for a recipe on the counter, sheet music on a stand, a kiosk, or a long transfer you want to watch.
Fill the screen, kill the room lights, and give your eyes a minute. Fixed red, green, blue or white dots are stuck pixels. Bright patches at the edges of an LCD are backlight bleed, uneven gray blotches are clouding, and a silvery haze that shifts as you move your head is IPS glow. On OLED, a faint outline of a menu bar is burn-in. Check at your usual brightness, then at maximum.
H.264 in an MP4 container. The safe default for browsers, phones, TVs, car head units and editors.
VP9 in a WebM container, built for browser embedding. A big saving at 4K and 8K and on very short clips; larger than the MP4 on long clips below 4K.
The same H.264 stream as the MP4, wrapped for QuickTime and Final Cut Pro. Not ProRes, and no alpha channel.
Identical frames cost almost nothing to store: a full hour of 1080p MP4 is 716 KB, one minute is 18 KB.
| Length | 720p | 1080p | 4K |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5s | 4 KB | 8 KB | 26 KB |
| 10s | 5 KB | 8 KB | 245 KB |
| 30s | 6 KB | 10 KB | 735 KB |
| 1 min | 11 KB | 18 KB | 1.4 MB |
| 5 min | 41 KB | 61 KB | 7.2 MB |
| 10 min | 80 KB | 120 KB | 14.3 MB |
| 30 min | 238 KB | 358 KB | 43.0 MB |
| 1 hour | 474 KB | 716 KB | 86.0 MB |
All sizes are MP4. WebM saves a lot at 4K and 8K but runs larger on long clips below 4K, and the MOV is the same H.264 video in a different container.
Every desktop player can loop a black screen video indefinitely. In VLC, press L until the loop button reads Loop One, then F (Command-F on a Mac) for fullscreen. In QuickTime, tick View › Loop, then View › Enter Full Screen. In Windows Media Player, switch repeat on in the playback controls and use the fullscreen button. Phone gallery apps often have no repeat control; VLC for Android and iOS does. In OBS, add it as a Media Source and tick Loop.
