About Black Screen Video

Black Screen Video is run by forpix, an independent developer. How its pre-rendered FFmpeg files are made, and how ads pay for them.

2026/09/12

Black Screen Video does one thing. It gives you a pure black video file, ready to download. You pick a resolution, a length and a file format; one click later the file is on your device. There is no sign-up, no upload step, no rendering queue and no charge — every file on the site is free for everyone.

What a black screen video is actually for

A black screen video is a blank canvas of a known duration, and the people who need one rarely need it for the same reason:

  • Sleep, white noise and focus setups. A black file playing on a second monitor or a TV keeps the screen occupied without light bleed into a dark room.
  • Video editing. Editors drop black clips in as leader, as spacing between takes, as a fade-out tail or as a placeholder for footage still being graded.
  • Streaming and conferencing. A looping black file works as a "be right back" filler, an intermission card, or a neutral background.
  • Display testing. A full-screen black frame is the standard way to look for stuck pixels, backlight bleed and IPS glow on a new panel.
  • Timing. Fixed-length black segments are the simplest way to time a break in a lecture recording, a stream intermission or a kiosk loop.

Why downloadable files instead of a stream

Search for a black screen and almost everything you find is a stream: hour-long uploads wrapped in pre-roll, autoplay-next, recommendation panels, and a buffering wheel every time the connection dips. A black screen is usually needed in the background — while you sleep, while an edit renders, while a stream is paused — and a streamed one keeps interrupting itself, pulls bandwidth for an hour of nothing, and stops working the moment the Wi-Fi drops.

A local file solves all of that. Once it is on your disk it plays offline, loops in any player, imports straight into a timeline, and nothing gets inserted into it mid-playback. The file itself contains no embedded advertising, no audio track and no watermark, because there is nothing in it but black pixels.

How the files are made

Every file here is generated in advance with FFmpeg, the open-source encoding toolkit, using its built-in color source set to black. Nothing is filmed, recorded, scraped or licensed from a third party, so no stock-footage terms are attached to anything on this site.

Concretely, each file is:

  • Pure black — a solid #000000 frame, every frame, in the standard yuv420p pixel format that consumer players and editing software expect.
  • Silent — there is no audio stream in the container at all, not even a muted one.
  • Unbranded — no watermark, no logo, no intro or end card.
  • Fixed-length — the duration you pick is the duration you get, to the second.

MP4 and MOV files are encoded with H.264; WebM files use VP9. Finished files live in Cloudflare R2 object storage and are delivered through a small Cloudflare Worker that streams the requested object, checks the request came from this site, and applies basic rate limiting. Because encoding happens once, on our side, downloads start immediately: the site never renders video in your browser and never queues you.

What is available

The catalogue is a complete grid — 5 resolutions x 8 durations x 3 formats, or 120 individual files:

  • Resolutions: 480p (854x480), 720p (1280x720), 1080p (1920x1080), 4K (3840x2160), 8K (7680x4320)
  • Durations: 5 seconds, 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour
  • Formats: MP4 (H.264), WebM (VP9), MOV (H.264)

Every combination is free, 8K included. Alongside the main tool there are dedicated pages for the options people ask for most — the one-hour black screen, the five-second clip, MP4, 1080p, 4K and 8K — each with its own notes on when that option is the right one and which players handle it best.

How this site makes money

This deserves a straight answer, because "free" on the internet usually hides something.

Storing 8K video files, serving them worldwide over a CDN and renewing the domain all cost money, and those costs are covered by display advertising served through Google AdSense. The placement is deliberately restrained: a single ad unit, directly below the download panel, rendered only after your download has already been triggered — so an ad never stands between you and the file you came for. We do not use redirect pages, countdown timers or "click here to unlock your download" gates. Ad units are labelled as advertising so you can tell them apart from the site's own content.

There is nothing else. We do not sell the files, put resolutions or durations behind a paywall, run a subscription, take donations, sell or rent visitor data, or ask you to create an account. There is no login system and no checkout on this site at all.

Advertising and analytics involve cookies and similar technologies from Google and its partners. What is collected, and how to control or opt out of it, is set out in our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy.

Who runs this site

Black Screen Video is published at blackscreenvideo.com by forpix, an independent developer. It is a personal project rather than a company — there is no team, no office and no staff behind it. It is not a product of any video platform, stock-footage marketplace or hardware manufacturer, and it is not affiliated with any of them. The files, the published specifications and the explanatory text are all produced and maintained by forpix, who reads and answers every message sent to support@blackscreenvideo.com.

Who writes what you read here

Every page of explanatory text, every FAQ answer and every usage note on this site is written and edited by hand by forpix. None of it is scraped, spun or reposted from elsewhere. Technical claims are checked against the encoding pipeline itself: the resolutions, durations, formats, codecs and file sizes described on the site are read from the same configuration that produces the files, so published specs and delivered files cannot drift apart. The site is published in 12 languages; where a page's body text has not been localised yet, the English original is shown rather than an auto-translated stand-in dropped into the layout.

Pages are reviewed periodically and updated whenever a format, resolution or specification changes. The legal pages carry their own effective dates.

Getting in touch

Questions, bug reports, licensing queries, or a request for a resolution, duration or format we do not carry yet are all welcome at support@blackscreenvideo.com. We usually reply within one to two business days. Including the page URL — and, for playback problems, your device and browser — gets you a useful answer faster. The Contact page carries the same address plus a short checklist of what to include.
